Long Beach Neighborhood Guide

Each Long Beach neighborhood has its own character, housing styles, and daily rhythm. Here is a quick look at four areas we know well.

Belmont Shore

Belmont Shore is a beachfront neighborhood known for Second Street, with restaurants, bars, and boutiques just blocks from the sand.

 

HOMES AND ARCHITECTURE

• Most homes were built in the 1920s and 1930s

• Styles include Spanish-style homes, remodeled and expanded older homes, and newer contemporary houses

• Several blocks of multifamily apartment buildings

 

LANDMARKS AND EVENTS

• Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier and Rosie's Dog Beach

• Alamitos Bay for kayaking, paddleboarding, and sailing

• Fire Engine Company No. 8, built in 1929

• Congressional Cup sailing regatta (April), Belmont Shore Car Show (September), and the Christmas Parade

Belmont Heights

Belmont Heights sits just east of downtown Long Beach, with historic homes and the oldest surviving homes dating to 1905. It began as its own city in 1908 and joined Long Beach in 1909.

 

HOMES AND ARCHITECTURE

• Belmont Heights Historic District (between 4th and 7th Streets): 304 surveyed homes, including 206 Craftsman bungalows and 125 unaltered examples

• Craftsman homes of this era are known for front porches, exposed rafters, and built-in woodwork

• Other styles include Spanish Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, Victorian, and Mediterranean

• Construction peaked in 1922

• Eliot Lane, with 30 historic homes

• Brown's Court Apartments, a 1923 Spanish bungalow court

Alamitos Beach

Alamitos Beach is a coastal neighborhood just east of downtown Long Beach, with beachfront dining and bars along Broadway. The neighborhood was laid out in the 1920s, and many of its buildings date to that era.

 

HOMES AND ARCHITECTURE

• Numerous two-story structures from the 1920s

• Large beachfront condominiums and smaller apartment buildings

• Two-story townhomes, bungalows, and single-family homes inland

 

LANDMARKS AND EVENTS

• Ebell of Long Beach, Villa Riviera, and the St. Regis Condominiums (1922)

• Ocean Boulevard hosts the Long Beach Grand Prix, Long Beach Marathon, and Pride Parade

• Scheduled to host beach volleyball at the 2028 Olympics

• A bike path connects the area to Belmont Shore

Alamitos Heights

Alamitos Heights is a largely residential neighborhood just east of downtown Long Beach, near Alamitos Bay and Colorado Lagoon.

 

HOMES AND HISTORY

• A mix of single-family detached homes and apartments

• The Pacific Electric Balboa Line served the area from 1904 to 1950

 

OUTDOORS

• Colorado Lagoon and Marina Vista Park nearby

• Pacific Electric Bike Trail along 6th Street

Los Cerritos

Los Cerritos is a residential area in north Long Beach, subdivided in 1906 on 330 acres surrounding Rancho Los Cerritos.

 

HOMES AND ARCHITECTURE

• The area has about 700 homes, many of them estate-sized

• Architects represented include Kirtland Cutter, who designed three homes in 1929

• The Jennie A. Reeve House was designed by Greene and Greene

• The Leonie Pray House is a Tudor Revival design by Clarence Aldrich

 

LANDMARKS

• Rancho Los Cerritos

• The Pacific Electric Long Beach Line served the area until 1961

Cal Heights

Cal Heights is a residential area in north Long Beach that was part of the Bixby Ranch until the early 1920s.

• The area has about 1,500 homes, most built by 1939

• Homes are predominantly Spanish Colonial Revival, with Craftsman and Tudor Revival styles as well

• A local historic district since 1990, which requires a Certificate of Appropriateness for exterior changes

 

LANDMARKS AND EVENTS

• A historic home tour is held in the neighborhood

Downtown Long Beach is the city's urban core, with high-rise condominiums, converted historic buildings, and a waterfront with a marina and promenade.

Wrigley

Wrigley is a central Long Beach area named for William Wrigley Jr. It includes North Wrigley, South Wrigley, Southeast Wrigley, and Wrigley Heights.

 

HOMES AND ARCHITECTURE

• The subdivision pattern dates to 1905

• Between 1928 and 1934, the Wrigley company built homes on 48 lots, now the Wrigley Landmark District

• Homes range from 1925 Craftsman-style houses to newer construction

 

LANDMARKS AND EVENTS

• Veterans Memorial Park and Baker Street Park

• Wrigley Greenbelt along the Los Angeles River

• Daisy Avenue Greenbelt, which follows a former Pacific Electric rail line

Naples

Naples is a set of three islands in Alamitos Bay, with canals, Italian street names, and Mediterranean-style architecture.

• Development began in the early 1900s and was completed in the 1920s

• Original homes featured Mediterranean Revival and California Spanish styles

• Designed by Mayberry and Parker, inspired by the canals of Venice

• Overlook Park and Mother's Beach

Bixby Knolls is a central Long Beach area that grew from the Bixby family's ranch land, with a commercial corridor along Long Beach Blvd.

• Most homes were custom built between 1920 and 1940

• Styles include Spanish Colonial Revival, Period Revival, and Craftsman

• The Hugh R. Davies 20th Century House is a local landmark

Lakewood Village is a residential area in eastern Long Beach, built on land once part of the Montana Ranch and annexed by the city in 1953.

• The area was part of the Montana Ranch from the late 1890s

• Developer-built homes began going up in 1949

• Styles include Tudor, Cape Cod, French Country, Ranch, Spanish Colonial, Mediterranean, Streamline Moderne, and Craftsman

Rose Park

Rose Park is a residential area in central Long Beach, settled in 1905 and subdivided in stages through 1921.

• Ranch and Neo-Traditional homes were added in the 1930s and 1940s

• The area includes two City of Long Beach historic districts
